"Hate is tiresome"—a memorable speech that has made him a rising star, dubbed the second Obama at just 37 years old.
[Block Media Reporter Lee Jeong-hwa] "You cannot buy Texas with money. Hate is tiresome."
Democrat James Talarico, who toppled the Republican stronghold of Texas in the U.S. midterm elections, is gaining attention as a pro-Bitcoin politician. Talarico's victory is a significant blow to the Republican Party and President Trump, but it signifies the emergence of a political newcomer for the digital asset industry.
With Talarico's popularity soaring and being hailed as the second Obama, his future actions are closely watched. Elon Musk and the Winklevoss twins poured astronomical funds into Talarico's opposition campaign but failed. In contrast, some tech companies like Ripple Labs supported Talarico with campaign contributions. The contrasting actions of companies are also a point of interest.
Support for Texas Bitcoin Reserve Bill
Democrat James Talarico, elected as a U.S. Senator from Texas, a Republican stronghold, has long been classified as a Bitcoin-friendly politician. During his time as a Texas State Representative, Talarico supported a bill allowing the state government to strategically hold Bitcoin. He also pledged to establish clear and fair regulations for the cryptocurrency industry during his campaign.
Democrat James Talarico, the first Democratic senator from Texas in 38 years.
According to TheStreet, Ripple Labs, Google, and venture capitalist Ron Conway provided substantial campaign contributions to Talarico. In contrast, the political action committee supported by the Winklevoss twins, co-founders of the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, spent funds to oppose Talarico.
Talarico, a 37-year-old former middle school teacher and Texas State Representative, has made reducing the burden of living expenses, eradicating political corruption, and diminishing the political influence of big corporations and billionaires his main pledges. After graduating from the prestigious University of Texas at Austin and Harvard University, he even studied at a theological seminary, reflecting his deep Christian faith.
His campaign slogan was "Love Your Neighbor," which differentiated him from Republican candidates by focusing on the welfare of the people rather than progressive political slogans of the Democratic Party. He has been praised for melting the conservative stronghold of Texas with his unique boldness.
The most notable aspect of his digital asset policy is his support for the Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill (SB 21). This law allows the Texas state government to hold Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that meet certain criteria as strategic reserve assets. It came into effect on June 20, 2025.
The law stipulates that investments must be made in digital assets with an average market capitalization of over $50 billion over the past 24 months. It provides a legal basis for the state government to utilize digital assets as long-term financial reserve assets. The U.S. digital asset advocacy group Stand With Crypto classified Talarico as an A-rated pro-digital asset politician based on his support for this bill.
"Clear and Fair Rules Must Apply to Cryptocurrencies"
Talarico also expressed his stance on cryptocurrency regulation on his official campaign website. In his pledges regarding 'social media, artificial intelligence, and technology,' he stated, "I support clear and fair rules for cryptocurrencies." He further emphasized the need to incorporate digital assets into a clear regulatory framework so that cryptocurrency companies follow the same rules as other businesses, stating, "We must protect consumers from fraud while allowing legitimate innovation to thrive."
Talarico's position focuses on operating the digital asset industry within a clear regulatory framework, rather than banning or excluding it, similar to the existing financial industry.
However, his specific stance on federal stablecoin regulation laws like the GENIUS Act or digital asset market structure laws like the CLARITY Act has not been confirmed. During his four terms in the House, Talarico primarily focused on education and labor issues. It remains to be seen whether he will be part of the Senate committee dealing with digital asset legislation.
Campaign Contributions from Ripple, Google, Ron Conway
The political contributions from digital asset companies and Silicon Valley investors during Talarico's election process have also drawn attention. TheStreet reported that Ripple Labs, Google, and notable venture capitalist Ron Conway, along with six companies or related executives, supported Talarico. The total amount of support reported by the media is $1,789,900.
However, this amount is a sum of contributions from various companies and individuals, and it has not been confirmed how much Ripple contributed individually.
A prominent super PAC supporting Talarico is Lone Star Rising. According to the Texas Tribune, Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, donated $10 million to this super PAC in June. Hoffman had previously supported a total of $1.5 million in January and February. Talarico has advocated for reducing the influence of corporate political contributions and abolishing the super PAC system. However, during the election process, he accepted support from super PACs that backed him.
Musk and Winklevoss Twins Fund Opposition Campaign
Not all in the digital asset industry supported Talarico. According to TheStreet, the Digital Freedom Fund and Fellowship PAC spent $853,338 to support Republican candidate Paxton. Musk invested 600 billion won to support several Republican candidates in the midterm elections, including Paxton from Texas. Paxton was nominated by President Trump but faced defeat in this election.
The Republican support campaign group spent $514,380 on election activities against Talarico. The Digital Freedom Fund is a political action committee supported by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, co-founders of the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini.
Despite Talarico's support for the Bitcoin Reserve Bill and his pledge to clarify cryptocurrency regulations, some funds from the industry supported Republican candidates. This illustrates that political contributions from the digital asset industry are influenced not only by individual cryptocurrency policies of candidates but also by party affiliations and other economic and political interests.
Democratic Control of the Senate... A Variable for Digital Asset Legislation
Talarico's election marks a noteworthy change in U.S. digital asset policy. He is a Democrat with a legislative record supporting the Bitcoin Strategic Reserve Bill. He has emphasized both the need for regulatory clarity and support for innovation in the cryptocurrency industry.
With the Democrats holding a majority in the Senate, the digital asset industry is watching how the new Congress will handle subsequent legislation related to market structure laws and stablecoins. Whether Talarico will maintain his pro-Bitcoin stance at the federal level in digital asset legislation is crucial.
However, his pledges also emphasize consumer protection and regulatory compliance for businesses. It cannot be interpreted that supporting the Bitcoin Reserve Bill means supporting all regulatory easing policies for the digital asset industry. It will be interesting to see what digital asset policies Talarico will pursue in Washington, given the intersection of support from some in the industry and opposition from the Winklevoss twins.
